“ROAD TO FAME FOR SINGER KELSOM – Kelsom Hashim has just turned 21, but she’s already started to spin her multi-lingual road to fame. She’s making her big break in the recording business with two EPs – one in Malay and one in English, and she hopes to cut records in Chinese soon. Kelsom, a former schoolgirl of Katong Convent started singing over television shows like Kalong Senandong and Pesta Pop three years ago. In Hong Kong last year, she appeared over popular television series Enjoy Yourself Tonight, and was offered a recording contract there. But Kelsom said: ‘I told them I would like to do recordings in Singapore, and I hope to sing in as many languages as I possibly can.’ Back in Singapore, Kelsom was signed up by Quill Organisation for two years’ recordings under the Libra label. Kelsom, an air hostess with a local airline, is now doing her singing part-time, but she said she would quit the dizzy heights if she could make her way on records. Her first record in Malay would be released soon. Kelsom will be backed by the Australian pop-group the Tenderness in her first recording in English, to be made next Tuesday.” [The Straits Times, August 25, 1970, 16]
