About
Marie Hall (1884–1956) was a British violinist of international renown, trained under Otakar Ševčík in Prague, who described her as “the greatest woman violinist the world has ever known” [Straits Budget 1910]. Born in Newcastle, she rose from modest beginnings to international acclaim, debuting in Vienna in 1902 and London in 1903 before embarking on extensive worldwide tours [Singapore Free Press 1911].
Her career was marked by wide travel across South Africa, India, Malaya, and Australasia. Press reports noted that she “broke all records for phenomenal receipts in South Africa” before continuing to India and the Far East [Straits Budget 1910]. In Singapore, her visit was described as “an unprecedented event for an artist of Marie Hall’s calibre to come so far afield” [Straits Times 1913a].
Singapore and Straits Settlements Performances:
Her recitals at the Victoria Theatre in March 1913 were under the patronage of Governor Sir Arthur Young and Lady Young. The Straits Times reported: “The plans for both recitals… take place in the Victoria Theatre on Wednesday and Thursday March 5 and 6, opened this morning at the Robinson Piano Co.” [Straits Times 1913a]. Ticket demand was immediate: “In two days the plans for the recitals… have been practically filled, so great has been the demand for seats” [Singapore Free Press 1913a]. Additional concerts were arranged: “Two more recitals, to take place in the Victoria Theatre on Friday and Saturday March 7 and 8” [Singapore Free Press 1913b]. Reports emphasized her reception: “Miss Marie Hall received another great reception last night. H.E. the Governor was present at the recital” [Straits Echo 1913]. Fixtures in Penang confirm her appearances at Town Hall on March 19 and 20, 1913 [Pinang Gazette 1913].
India and Regional Tours:
In Delhi, “Miss Marie Hall gave a highly delightful concert at the Delhi Town Hall, before a crowded and highly enthusiastic audience. She took her audience by storm, and they insisted on encoring each item in the programme” [Straits Times 1913b]. The program included Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E minor, Schubert’s “Ave Maria,” Beethoven’s “Minuet,” Hubay’s “Hejre Kati,” Dvořák’s “Humoreske,” and Ries’s “Moto perpetuo.”
In 1911, Hall married her business manager Edward Barrington at Marylebone Parish Church, London. The Singapore Free Press reported: “The ceremony took place quietly at Marylebone Parish Church, with Miss Louie Basche, Miss Marie Hall’s accompanist, as the only bridesmaid… After twenty months of study, she was given a Stradivarius violin worth £1,600 and debuted in Vienna in 1902” [Singapore Free Press 1911].
In 1914, she was reported returning to England from the Riviera when her train was involved in a collision near Calais. The Singapore Free Press noted: “Miss Marie Hall, the violinist, who was returning to England from the Riviera, had a narrow escape in the train smash” [Singapore Free Press 1914].
