About
Hong Kong singer who came to Singapore for a nightclub engagement in 1966.
Appeared in Singapore at the Singapore Hotel [November–December 1966].
An interview claims “has seven movies to her credit” and “several records” but no details are known.
“Petite Lolita Shek, at present singing at the Singapore Hotel, plans to quit the spotlight within another two years. Her ambition is to open a women’s shop and take up dress designing. Lolita, who has seven movies to her credit, said: ‘I design my own clothes, and before I set up business for myself I would like to go to Europe and look around there.’ Lolita received her basic training as a singer from an aunt who had a talent for music. ‘My aunt thought I could sing and act, so after training me she took me along to a nightclub for an audition,’ she said. ‘As it happened, the nightclub was looking for a singer at that time and I was accepted and managed to make good,’ added Lolita, who has made several records. ‘But I don’t really like singing for a living. I enjoy it when I sing for fun, but having to do it as a job makes it all rather a chore. The result is that I’m not a very steady worker. Whenever I have enough money to take a holiday I stop work and don’t start again until my cash runs out. I’m also a moody person, and when I am in a bad mood I finish the evening feeling very dissatisfied with my singing and that doesn’t help matters.’ Lolita sings pop and romantic songs, as well as those with an a-go-go beat, but confesses that she likes sentimental numbers best. She has already appeared in most of the capital cities of the Far East and when her three months in Singapore is up she may either be going to Borneo or to Taipeh.” [Radio Weekly, December 12, 1966, 1]
