About

Merdeka Stadium officially opened on 30 August 1957. It was the site of the formal declaration of independence of the Federation of Malaya on 31 August 1957, and the proclamation of Malaysia on 16 September 1963. Designed to accommodate major public gatherings, the stadium played host to political ceremonies, sporting events, and large-scale cultural performances throughout the 1960s and beyond.

On 22 April 1963, Merdeka Stadium was the venue for a performance of Aneka Ragam Singapura, presented by Singapore’s 120-member goodwill cultural troupe and led by Minister for Culture, S. Rajaratnam.
