About
Doris Ang is a Singaporean singer whose career started by accident at age 17 in 1968.
Her brother, Allan, was the lead guitarist in a band called The Sandboys. The band had been offered a recording contract, but the record company asked if they had a female vocalist, as they thought that would increase sales. The band didn’t have a female vocalist, but Allan suggested his younger sister, Doris. Consequently, when the Sandboys made their first record, it was credited as Doris Ang And The Sandboys.
The record was quite successful, and Doris and the band went on to make further records over the next several months. Her voice is very much like Rita Chao’s, and her first records feature songs made popular by that very popular artist. Gradually, Doris developed her own style and began attracting a following. The White Cloud record company continued to release her records until 1970 (with only the first few featuring The Sandboys).
Doris also had a public profile due to her appearances at various nightclubs. She began singing at the Fountain nightclub in 1968, then the Springdale Nite Club from late 1968 to early 1969, and the Sea Palace Restaurant & Nite-Club on an island off Ponggol Point from March 1969 to February 1972.
