About
The Victoria Theatre, at 9 Empress Place, Singapore, was originally built as the Town Hall. Construction took place between 1855 and 1862. After the Victoria Memorial Hall was built on an adjacent site, the Town Hall was remodelled as a theatre and opened on 11 February 1909 with a production of The Pirates of Penzance, the British operetta by W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan. In addition to public performances, the Victoria Theatre has been used for political meetings. Further renovations were undertaken between 1952 and 1958 to provide sound-proofing and air conditioning. The Victoria Theatre and Concert Hall were further renovated between 2010 and 2014.
