About

The Marionette Theatre of Australia toured to 14 Asian countries beginning on Oct. 24, 1966. The tour opened in New Delhi, and then proceeded to Pakistan. Also included in the itinerary are Ceylon, Burma, Malaysia, Singapore, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Philippines, and Indonesia. Australian government had provided a grant of up to $82,000 for the troupe to make the Asia tour possible (The Straits Times, 24 September 1966).

The troupe adapted their original works to perform in various local languages. For instance, the Malay adaptation was done by Radio Malaysia. In Ceylon, the troupe adapted their plays to Singhalese, and in Indonesia, they performed in Indonesian (The Straits Budget, 1 March 1967). The director of the troupe, Peter Scriven said, “All we do is get the broadcasting company of the country we play in to record the play in their language and we synchronize it” (The Straits Times, 16 February 1967).
